  1. An app for mobile devices is really the best I can describe it. A simple clean and concise app for easy viewing on our favorite MP's shenanigans.

  3. MPs use oral questions (aka Question Period) to raise questions to the government, but as we know, there are time limits to both the question and response time. MPs also take advantage of submitting up to four written questions on the order paper that the government is required to respond to within 45 days. Often these q's are much more substantive. However, they are hard to find (even in Hansard, they are often just referred to by the question number) - and when answers are tabled, the response (and supporting data) isn't always accessible to the public! Step one would…

I absolutely agree that making written questions more accessible would be great, though I don’t really see the benefit of highlighting questions until the answers are available. I haven’t done any research or activism around making these answers more public; if you or anyone reading this would like to research the situation a bit more, and see what might be possible in terms of getting the answers, that’d be great.

  4. I imagine it's already on your radar, but wondering what your thoughts are on leveraging this community for your scraping? I'm just starting to look into it myself, so perhaps it doesn't fit, but thought I'd ask :)

I've said it before, but I'll say it again -- LOVE your efforts!!

  5. THERE SHOULD BE A WHOLE SEPARATE SECTION FOR THEM! DEBATES, VOTES, SENATORS, COMMITTEES, ETC!

Those ladies and gentlemen work in the same building, we should be looking at what they're doing as well!

And I suggest possibly adding third section on the projects they work together on, such as the Library of Parliament.

    Thanks

The Senate is relatively low on my priority list for a couple of reasons. First, of course, it’s a much less powerful & politically relevant body than the House. And it’s also well behind the House in terms of technology: their data isn’t nearly as structured or sophisticated as the House’s, which makes automated coverage difficult.

But of course I’m interested to see how many people would want Senate information.

  6. News stories which feature persons with names similar to the names of MPs are being erroneously associated with those MPs. Perhaps links are needed so that site visitors can alert administrators when this occurs.

  9. Some bills may expire before being passed or be defeated, but be reintroduced as basically the same thing. It can be hard keeping them straight, so it would be great if we could trace them forward and back. i.e. C-32/C-11, or C-54/C-30

  10. Given that "didn't vote" means something different for the member in the Speaker's chair I think it would be useful to identify that on the vote pages.

I’d love to see similar sites in the provinces, and am eager to provide help and code to anyone who wants to build a provincial site. But the federal Parliament is more than enough of a project for lone-volunteer me.

  12. I would like to see a list of how my MP voted on all sorts of topics since the last election so that people in my riding can see a summary of their MPs stand on the issues before elections.

Sponsored bills are now listed in a member’s activity feed. I’ll leave this idea around, because I should probably add a full, historical list of sponsored bills as well (and not just the last few).

  16. Google News allows you to generate an RSS feed that contains articles matching search query.

I would like to have this as well, I am working on a site for a departmental intranet and a feed of all things discussed in Parliament related to our department mandate would be really useful.

This actually exists as a bit of a secret feature. It’s on the to-do list to test and polish this and allow e-mail alerts. But to get an RSS feed, just do a search, and look for the RSS icon (usually radiating semicircles on an orange background) in your browser’s address bar.

I’d love to have a French version of the site, but without funding it’s just too much for me to take on personally. If a programmer out there wants to take on the project, I’d be thrilled. From the openparliament developer wiki:

J’aimerais énormément avoir une version française du site. Je pense que, au lieu d’inclure les infos français dans la base de données actuelle, c’est meilleur de créer une site séparée, avec une differente base de données. (Ce projet nécessite non pas seulement traduire les pages HTML de openparliament.ca, mais obtenir les versions françaises du Hansard et des autres documents qu’on utilise.)

  18. It would make fact checking easier.

  19. Elections Canada has a publicly accessible structured list of donors and votes broken down by riding. It could be neat to include it on the site.
